The Medici Route

A concentration of art, culture and taste. Among the wonderful landscapes of Montalbano and the Tuscan hills, designed by man, a path marked by the beauty and marvel that the Medici family has been able to imprint on this area.

Journey Details

The meeting point is in Prato, at the train central station, usually at 09:00. The legs may vary depending on the availability of the accommodation facilities. We will approximately walk between 15 and 20 km per day, with maximum overall climb of around 500 m.
The path does not have any particular technical difficulty, but it still requires a minimum of walking training and adequate equipment.
Along the way we will visit two Medici Villas, UNESCO heritage, and significant places in the history of the Medici family.
Every day there will be a tasting of local products.
It is recommended to book at least one month before departure.

Program
  • Metting at Prato’s Train Station at 9:00.
  • The walk usually lasts until 16/16:30, depending on the weather condition and the group pace.
  • Packed lunch.
  • Arrival to San Miniato – Fucecchio train station around 16.
  • Video meeting among the participants, the organization and the guide for a briefing about the journey one week / 10 days before leaving.
What to bring in the backpack

Luggage transport is available, so only what is necessary for the day trip should be placed in the backpack. In particular:

  • possibility to carry up to 1,5L of water
  • everything you need to protect yourself from the sun and rain (cape and gaiters recommended)
  • Insects repellent spray/lotion
  • spare linen
  • what you believe is necessary for food: energy bars, dried fruit, etc.
  • any medicines.
Best time of the year to leave

The Medici Route is a path that can be traveled all year long. During spring, nature gives its best in terms of blooms and panoramas. In summer it is really hot. In autumn there is a risk of some rain, but once again nature puts on a show with its colours.

  • Where do we eat?
    During the day we will almost always have packed lunch, buying what you need at the start of each stage or in some bar along the way. In the evening we will have dinner in the accommodation site.
  • Do I have to arrive on the first day with lunch in my backpack?
    Yes.
  • What do I put in my luggage?
    All the clothing changes you need, according to the season. Get advice on the temperatures in the area in the pre-departure video call. All the medicines that may be necessary,  it is rare to come across pharmacies along the way.

With a local guide

Thanks to the presence of a local guide, you will never have to worry about the route to follow, finding water sources, etc., and you will also receive a lot of information about the areas you are visiting. In this way it will not just be a point-to-point journey, but a continuous discovery of places, history, people and traditions.

The advantage of luggage transport

There will be no need to worry about minimizing what you carry with you to avoid having an excessive load on your shoulders!! Luggage transport allows you to travel more relaxed, enjoying the time spent walking to the fullest!

The Medici Route is not particularly abundant of accommodation facilities along the way: we have selected some sites of great beauty and quality, where it will be possible to taste local products and relax in a comfortable environment at the end of each day, enjoying the characteristics of the Tuscan countryside .
